'Launch of Petition for Gormley to Re-route M3 Motorway to be Held Outside Green Party Office'

The launch of a petition to the Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, to re-route the M3 motorway, will be held outside Green Party headquarters on Suffolk Street in Dublin at 12.00 pm on Monday.

TaraWatch, who claim the Minister has both the power and duty to protect the national monuments at Tara, is launching the petition drive. The purpose of the petition is to compel Minister Gormley to act to protect Tara, so that Irish citizens are not forced risk seeking relief in the Courts.

The petition calls on Minister Gormley halt work on archaeolical sites at Tara, since there have been at least five material changes in circumstances since the former Minister, Dick Roche, made his order to demolish the Lismullin henge:

1. The inclusion of the Hill of Tara on the World Monuments Fund's List of 100 Most Endangered Sites

2. The EU M3 investigation report due in September 3 and the new complaint by Stavros Dimas about the National Development Plan.

3. The discovery of a new national monument, at the souterrain complex in Lismullin.

4. The Stern Report on the Effects of Climate Change, which was not considered by Minister Roche or An Bord Pleanala before granting planning permission.

5. Demolition of the Baronstown site that the Director of the National Museum said should have been a national monument, revealing a flaw in NRA methodology

The petition drive will also occur on the Internet, and the petition is located primarily at:

""Minister Gormley appears to possess the legal ability, but lack the political will to save Tara. Perhaps he expects ordinary Irish citizens and the Courts to do his job for him?

Vincent Salafia said:
"Minister Gormley is now morally obligated to take control of the Tara crisis, as there have been at least five major material changes in circumstances. That view is reinforced by recent surveys showing 75% of respondents want the M3 routed.

"We have sent a copy of the petition to Patricia McKenna, and have invited her to sign it ENDS
