PRESS RELEASE

David Lydon Music

For most artists, it is easy to classify their sound into one genre. Rock. Traditional. Alternative. It is mostly only in compilations, those infamous 2 disc CD’s, that we are offered a variety of tastes and sounds. This is not the case with David Lydon’s latest album ‘Hello Ugly Hello Friend’ which has recently been played on radio stations throughout Ireland and America.

David Lydon, 33, has been writing and performing for over a decade. Many may remember him as the headlining artist on “Origin -
See the Light” with Jon Richards’ Origin Records and from his video of ‘Someone Else’ on No Disco during his earlier days as a musician. Although originally spurred to write in earnest by Nirvana and other similar acts in the mid nineties, he has some key long-standing influences, chief being soul-baring singers such as John Lennon, David Bowie and Leonard Cohen.

Avoiding the restrictions of catering his music to one genre, he hopes the honesty of ‘Hello Ugly Hello Friend’ appeals to everyone. Tracks on the album contain elements that range from the jazz inspired vocals of ‘Reserve’, the rock guitar driven ‘Just Found Out’ and ‘Oh Alcohol’ to the tender and haunting chorus of ‘I Won’t Move On.’ But diversity in style is only a small part of what David Lydon offers. He writes from the frontline of experience, relaying stories of overcoming addiction, depression and
surviving lost love with sincerity and insight.

As expected, David Lydon wrote and produced much of the album, however it does include the work of many talented Irish musicians such as the Stunning’s Cormac Dunne on percussion and John Dunne, the talented pianist and former conductor of Galway’s Black Magic Orchestra. The title of the album has drawn many different responses. It was recently featured on the Boston radio station Paddy Whacked Radio where it was said to have ‘the best album title ever.’ The artist took the title at the suggestion of a friend from the opening lines of ‘Hello Ugly’. A song which, David says, was written about coming home to himself after ‘a long time apart.’

"Many acts will have been content with having found a particular sound and sticking with that throughout the recording process. However Lydon goes for a different vocal style as the tracks progress. 'Just Found Out' has a distinctive chorus hook and the minimised instrumentation around it really brings the vocals to the fore. 'Hello Ugly' has shades of Johnny Cash but wisely doesn't borrow too much from The Man In Black … With a number of significant live appearances under his belt already, this is an artist who could flourish.”
