14.07.2006: Outersounds levels the playing field for Irish Artists:Outersounds

more news... back to home page...

Starting from July 14th, Outersounds will be submitting sales data to Chart Track for inclusion in the official Irish music charts. Effectively this opens the charts to Independent artists through digital download sales. Anyone selling music via Outersounds can benefit from the recognition, exposure, and possible radio airplay, which results from an appearance in the charts.

IRMA still has a requirement that physical copies are ‘available’ for sale through a retail outlet, however there is no minimum specified for the number of physical copies available for sale. For more information about this, see www.irishunsigned.com, thanks to whom it has been possible to provide such a service. As an example, Red Hot Chilli Peppers reached No.50 on July 14th with one (yes, one) CD sold in shops, the rest sold online.

All tracks retail at 99c and Artists will be paid an Industry-beating 88% of profits from their sales. If Artists allow their account to reach a balance of €100 before cashing in, they will make 35% more due to reduced payment-processing fees. Essentially, Artists could make 88c per sale of their 99c tracks. And get them into the Charts, and onto radio, and into the ears of new fans.

Now for the technical bit…
All sales data submitted to Chart Track must include an ISRC (International Standard Recording Code). ISRCs can be assigned by anyone, though usually by the song’s producer or distributor. Once allocated, an ISRC is permanently associated with a song. It is very important that a song (or version of) has one, and only one, ISRC assigned to it. If your songs already have an ISRC, you can now enter it on the “manage music” page. If you are unsure about ISRCs, please check first, see the PPI ISRC page: http://www.ppiltd.com/isrc.htm

If you do not have an ISRC for your song, Outersounds can assign one, providing of course none have been assigned previously for that song. Allowing Outersounds to assign an ISRC with your music does not, in any away, affect your rights or ownership of your music. The ISRC, and details of your song/music, will be registered with Phonographic Performance Ireland (PPI) and so be permanently associated.

If you have any questions or issues please contact support@outersounds.ie or post in the forum. Remember, none of this will not work unless you tell as many people as possible that they can buy YOUR music at Outersounds.ie

Thanks for reading,
Enda
