30.04.2006: More (Irish) Music, less talk:Ron, IrishUnsigned

more news... back to home page...

While I can see the need for a talk-news-current affairs quota on Irish radio, to prevent it becoming "Wall to wall Pop music" as was the reasoning behind the quota (almost 15 years ago), it seems to have helped not a bit.

Now, instead of wall to wall Pop music, we have wall-to-wall pop music with the same news every hour on every station, and a few nonsense shouting-and-slagging sesiosn in the evenings.

At least, in Dublin we have.

Speaking personally, I couldn't agree more with the need for either more music and less talk, or simply more specialised stations. Did you know, by the way, that we actually *own* the airwaves that we can;t seem to get any control over?

The Govt is responsible for looking after our proprerty, so why not ask them to do so?

In the hope that most of the people reading this, by virtue of your interest in new Irish music, would be happy to hear that a station was broadcasting all new Irish music, all the time, or that commercial stations were broadcasting more and more new and developing Irish content, here's a coulpe of email addresses.

Email these guys and tell them what you think:

taoiseach@taoiseach.gov.ie

press.office@taoiseach.gov.ie

Neil.Farren@dcmnr.gov.ie

info@noeldempsey.ie

webmaster@dast.gov.ie

Of course, it won;t make the blindest bit of difference to these lot, but as is my soundest philosophy: Never let them say we didn;t tell them...
