30.04.2006: More Music Less Talk:More music, less talk

more news... back to home page...

More Music Less Talk is a consumer focused voluntary lobby group of music fans who are disenfranchised about the way Irish radio has failed to provide adequate music choices.

The AM band is dead and has been for years yet in most countries it thrives. The FM band is full of talk and news from community talk shows to talk shows and yet more talk and news from RTE and even the music stations are forced to do talk shows!!! Have you ever tried turning on the radio from around 4 minutes before and 8 minutes past the hour?

The BCI have continually failed to understand the desire of music fans to be able to listen and enjoy music freely without interruption of long 10 minute news shows every hour along with talk shows and other interference in the music we love. Why? Its actually the law. In Ireland we actually have a law that requires all radio stations that they must do 20% news and current
affairs along with general speech..... even on music stations. We have not
found a crazy law like this anywhere else in the world so far.

Imagine the outcry if all TV stations had to break up a movie or football game
every hour to bring the viewer 10 minutes of news!!"

The minister of communications has the power to change the act through
amendments to the 1988 or 2001 acts and the BCI can give a derogation
from this 20% but they consistently refuse to. In fact they have now decided to licenseyet more talk by looking to actually license a semi -national talk
station!!! Again music fans have suffered.

In Irealnd we will now have a choice every mid morning of talk, talk, mostly talk or talk from the 4 main, soon to be national/quasi nation stations.

We want change. Help us and hundreds of thousands of music fans across
Ireland who are being ignored by the BCI in their licesning let the music breath.
