In the archives of popular music history, THE BEAT will be celebrated as one of the earliest and most important ska-revivalist groups. Formed in 1978, this multi-racial ensemble carved their distinct sound through the use of alternating lead vocals between guitarist Dave Wakeling and punk-toaster/rapper Ranking Roger, and a tight band consisting of Andy Cox (guitar), Dave Steele (bass), Everett Morton (drums) and Saxa (saxophone). In the 1980'S they released a string of hit singles including "Mirror in the Bathroom","Rankin' full stop""Cant get used to losing you" "Save It For Later," "I Confess" and "Tears Of A Clown." Though the group disbanded in 1983, their influence can be clearly heard in a new generation of ska rock bands including No Doubt and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger went on to form General Public, while Cox and Steele formed Fine Young Cannibals. The original band are back for the first time in twenty years and play the village, wexford street, dublin on saturday 23rd of august for what is sure to be a sellout show.
