Clann Z? formed at the end of 1999 in Melbourne Australia. Ben and Declan were already busy with rock group Non Intentional Lifeform when they decided to start up a new project that would have a dramatic soundtrack quality to it.

It quickly became apparent that violin was necessary to complete the ambitious sound. Enter Russell. At the very first jam everything clicked and Clann Z? was born. Sound engineer Lach Wooden joined the group soon after and the sound quickly developed into a lush blend of dark and moving contemporary western sounds tinged with Middle Eastern and Irish melodies. The vocal melodies are sung in both Irish and English.

The first EP was recorded in February 2000 in an old abandoned bakery and finished in Clann Zu's own makeshift studio on Lygon St, Melbourne Australia. Their debut album "Rua" was recorded in Melbourne in 2001. The group then moved to Europe in December 2001 to widen their live playing horizons and collaboration possibilities. The band located in Ireland, Galway and Dublin where they honed their live show, wrote and demoed material for the second album.

While in Europe they signed to Canadian label G7 Welcoming Committee Records which sees the remastered and repackaged Rua album released in Canada and the USA in September 2003.

The band reconvene in Australia in late September 2003 to finish writing the second album with new bass player Liam Andrews. An Australian tour will follow before the lads head into the studio in Melbourne in December to record the next album to be released under the G7 label.
