Shhhhhh………Húsh are here! It has been a long 30 years since a serious live band emanated from the mediaeval town of Athenry in east county Galway but four young musicians, collectively known as Húsh have changed all that. Listening to the confident, mature rock/blues sounds coming from their rehearsal room in Athenry, it is almost impossible to comprehend that their average age is just 17! Playing together since they were very young, brothers Gavin (guitar) and Gary Deane (bass) teamed up with school-friend Colin Gill on drums and earlier this year, during the Leaving Cert music practicals at school, Gavin “discovered??? the final piece in the jigsaw, singer Marilyn Bane. It is true to say that each member of Húsh plays an equally important role and they all bring their own individual influences to create the band’s individual rock/blues sound. Influenced by blues icons such as Rory Gallagher, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, the Deane brothers and Gill lay down a varied tapestry which fuses brilliantly with the powerful voice of Bane. Among the favourites of the young singer with the great stage presence are Nina Simone, Janis Joplin and Susan Tedeschi, and while HUSH are working on their own songs, they also interpret songs by Taste, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Free. August 13th last was a big day for the young band. At 6.00 p.m. they officially launched their debut CD/ep called "Made In Athenry" on the Abbey Row record label. It features two songs written by Gavin Dean, "Home In The Past" and "Underfoot" and two more numbers composed by all four members, "My Red" and "Let's Go". At 9.00 p.m. Húsh played an open-air concert in The Square, Athenry (see photo). On Saturday 24 September Húsh play in Riddlers, Limerick. Shhh! Don’t tell anyone! |
