The Gurriers are a band from Dundalk, Ireland. They have been together now for six years and in that time have achieved a high level of success. Kicking off from the usual springboard most bands start on, the trusty garage, they honed a rough set as energetic and cocky as the lads themselves. Starting off with the name "Jaded", later changed to its present name "The Gurriers", the band is made up of Declan Lawless (Guitar+vocals), Alan Markey (Bass+vocals) and Colin Berrill (Drums). This tight-knit 3-piece quickly earned itself a reputation for snappy, entertaining live performances carried through with the guys own wacky sense of humour. Their first taste of success came only six months after the band's formation with them winning a place at "The Heineken Demo Mararhon", held in The Europa hotel in Belfast, one of only a handful of bands to do so. There they met top industry A&R people and journalists from the music press, who gave the band a favourable review along with sound advice for their future music careers. Later that year the band scored their next big success when the lads were spotted by an R.T.E. producer who asked the band to appear on his television show "Echo". This led to widespread coverage of the guys throughout Ireland. On the back of this minor success the band undertook a small tour around the country, which included appearing on some radio shows. They were surprised by the turnout at these gigs, mainly on the back of the television appearance. Retreating into the studio the band started recording what would become their first album, recorded both in Tumbleweed Studios, Dundalk and in the Temple Bar Music Center, Dublin. The album was released locally being well received by both their fans and the music press. On a visit to Dundalk, American record producer Gardner Cole picked up a copy of The Gurriers album (Spit or Swallow). Cole, himself a singer songwriter has worked with such artists as Madonna, Tina Turner, The Jacksons, Rod Stewart and Tom Jones. He was amazed with what he heard and wanted to get them signed as soon as possible to his own record label Cayenne Records. The Gurriers signed to Cayenne in the summer of 2000. This meant the band were finally in a position to leave work and college and spend the rest of the year recording, rehearsing and writing. However due to changes within the record company along with the continuing postponement of the album's release The Gurriers left Cayenne records in 2001. Picking themselves up after the disappointment of the previous year the guys went back on the road, the experience of the up's and down's of the music business not wasted on them. Touring with a stronger set than ever before, winning new crowds over with their fiery passionate performances the lads now truely are on top of their game as their latest E.P. clearly demonstrates.
